Abstract

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by progressive cognitive impairment and the formation of senile plaques. Silymarin, an extract of milk thistle, has long been used as a medicinal herb for liver diseases. Here we report marked suppression of amyloid β-protein (Aβ) fibril formation and neurotoxicity in PC12 cells after silymarin treatment in vitro. In vivo studies had indicated a significant reduction in brain Aβ deposition and improvement in behavioral abnormalities in amyloid precursor protein (APP) transgenic mice that had been preventively treated with a powdered diet containing 0.1% silymarin for 6 months. The silymarin-treated APP mice also showed less anxiety than the vehicle-treated APP mice. These behavioral changes were associated with a decline in Aβ oligomer production induced by silymarin intake. These results suggest that silymarin is a promising agent for the prevention of AD.

While I obviously do not know...

-20% Reduction in Serum Testosterone by 5 Cups of Green Tea. Endocrine Effects Depend on Catechin Composition.

While I obviously do not know whether you have come in contact with the rumors surrounding the effects of green tea extract (GTE) on the male reproductive system, I assume that many of you (despite the fact that this is obviously not necessary if you read the SuppVersity news everyday ;-) will be active on one of the various health and fitness related bulletin-boards, where - and here I am certain - the issue of reduced testosterone levels from GTE consumption has certainly been addressed at some point. According to a recent study, published in the September issue Indian Journal of Experimental Biology (Chandra. 2011), your favorite anti-oxidant fat burner Camellia sinensis L., in other words, green tea, has in fact to be counted among those therapeutic agents that despite having been used since ancient times, are not as safe as many customers want to believe.

Figure 1: Molecular structure of the four major green tea catechins (from Kao. 2000)

Did you know that a study from the year 2000 by Kao et al. (Kao. 2000) established a differential effect of green tea catechins (cf. fig. 1) on serum testosterone levels of Sprague Dawley (SD), as well as lean (LZ) and obese Zucker (OZ) rats? While EGCG (and ECG) potently suppressed serum testosterone levels (-69% in SD; -72% in LZ; -69% in OZ), the administration of isolated Epicatechin (EC) and Epigallocatechin (EGC) at a dose of 85 mg/kg BW (human equivalent: 14mg/kg) resulted in a statistically significant increase in testosterone levels of +24% (EC) and +31%, respectively.

In view of the fact that a 2006 analysis of 19 commercially available green tea extracts (Seeram. 2006) revealed that major differences in terms of total catechin content and ratios, the individual effect of "your" green tea caps may be either beneficial or detrimental to your testosterone levels depending on the ratio of (EC+EGC)/(ECG+EGCG) - where a higher amount of the pro-testostosterone fraction, i.e. EC + EGC would obviously be preferable.
According to the results of Amar K. Chandra and his colleagues from Calcutta and West Bengal, green tea belongs to the ranks of plants, such as Neem (Azadirachta indica), Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum) and ginger (Zingiber officinale), all of which have conclusively been shown to hamper reproductive functions and that despite the fact that the neuroprotective, cytotoxic and antioxidant effects of Camellia sinensis L. have been well-established.

Figure 2: Reduction in sperm count after 26 days of consumption of green tea equivalent to 5, 10 or 20 cups of green tea (data calculated based on Chandra. 2011)

As the data in figure 2 goes to show, in the course of 26 days, even the consumption of the equivalent of 5 cups of green tea lead to a statistically significant -2% reduction in sperm count in the gonads of the adult rats who were orally administered with standardized doses green tea after it had been steeped for 15 minutes in 100ml of boiling water, then cooled to room temperature and combined with a second infusion from the same 2.5g of green tea, the catechin composition of which I plotted in figure 3.

Figure 3: Catechin composition and pro- to anti-testosterone ratio of the green tea that was used in the study (Chandra. 2011)

The catechin composition of the specific green tea that was used in the study (the green tea came from the Institute of Himilayan Bioresource Technology) is, as you know from my elaborations on the Kao study in the red "Did you know"-box, probably the determining factor for its effect on the rats testosterone levels. Judged by what I called the pro- to anti-testosterone ratio of 0.47, i.e. the ratio of Epicatechin (EC) + Epigallocatechin (EGC), which increased testosterone in the Kao study, to Epicatechin-3-Gallate (ECG) + Epigallocatechin-3-Gallate (EGCG), which decreased testosterone in the Kao study, the overall effect of the green tea on the testosterone levels of the rats should be negative - and in fact, what Chandra et al. found was a decrease in serum testosterone levels in the "GTE treated groups of animals as compared to their respective control", of which the scientists speculate that it was "due to the impaired synthesis of testosterone."

Figure 4: Reduction in serum testosterone after 26 days of consumption of green tea equivalent to 5, 10 or 20 cups of green tea (data calculated based on Chandra. 2011)

These results also shed a different light on the recently reported "anti-obesity" effect of green tea. After all, the lack of androgens could be an alternative explanation for the GTE-induced 7-20% reduction in body weight Pea et al. observed in their 2011 rodent study and the reduced weight gain (-10% and -14% in the 10 and 20 cup groups, respectively) observed in the study at hand.

Weight loss or lack of weight gain, reduced testosterone, increased LH and all the other negative side effects aside, I would be surprised if low to moderate green tea consumption (2-3cups max.) would actually reduce your chance of conception, hamper your gains in the gym or even induce testicular failure. After all, neither Japan nor China or the other Asian Countries, the inhabitants of which have been having their well-deserved daily cup of (green-)tea for centuries, now, seem to have rampant fertility issues ;-)

The Chaska Fire Department said it quickly extinguished the fire. Authorities determined that the dog, a pug, had caused the fire after the strong scent of urine was found emanating from the outlet.

Initially, it appeared unlikely that the pug would be able to lift its leg high enough to hit the outlet. But closer inspection revealed that the pug likely climbed atop items that were on the floor, the department said.

It is not known how much damage the house sustained. Authorities also gave no word as to the health of the pug.
The former Terminator cum governor has joined the cast of David Ayer's Ten.
The upcoming film Ten is described as a tense action thriller in which a group of DEA agents go rogue and decided to swipe millions of dollars in drug money from the agency. Everything goes according to plan, until the agents begin dying at the hands of an unknown assassin, forcing the remaining team members to fight for the money and their lives.

It’s being directed by David Ayer, based on a script by Skip Woods. Ayer you’d likely know best as the writer of 2001′s Training Day, while Woods is most notable for writing the 2010 A-Team movie. Most crucially however, the film is now set to star former California governor, T-800 and most notable action star of the past two decades, Arnold Schwarzenegger.

This revelation comes courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter, who claims that the film has lingered in limbo for the past few years. Previously, District 13: Ultimatum director Patrick Alessandrin was scheduled to helm the film, which, at the time, was slated to star Bruce Willis. For whatever reason that plan floundered. Schwarzenegger, looking to dive back into acting in a big way following his stint in politics (he’ll appear in The Expendables 2 this summer and is scheduled to star alongside Sylvester Stallone in The Tomb) has agreed to star in the film, which THR believes will fast track the flick into production.

Action movie fans will note that this is something of a departure from Schwarzenegger’s previous work. It’s almost guaranteed that he’ll still be shooting people and dropping witty one-liners, but the role is far more morally ambiguous than the unassailably upright heroes Schwarzenegger is most famous for. Given that the man is nearly 65-years-old, it seems he’s attempting to rely more on his acting abilities and undeniable charisma than the stunning physique and indestructible one-man-army image he cultivated throughout the 80s and early 90s.

It’s anyone’s guess as to whether Arnold can recapture his former box office glory, but it seems quite likely that his upcoming films will still pull in huge amounts of cash, if only by
virtue of his legions of now-adult fans clamoring to once again see the man in action. Sure, he looked good in a suit, glad-handing lobbyists in Sacramento, but never does Schwarzenegger seem more at home than when he’s dual-wielding heavy machine guns and chomping a cigar.

After all the positive reviews about this combo, I wanted to give it a try for myself.

I took 1 scoop of pump-bol and 1 scoop of ultima only on workout days. About an hour before my workout I used the "swishing" technique for 15 minutes (from 60min-45min before working out). I took this combo for 9 weeks and am currently taking about a month off (still have a decent amount left in each tub). Half of the time I was using this combo I was working out 4 days a week, and then 3 days a week for the second half.

My stack:
ThermoLife Pump-Bol
Controlled Labs Orange Triad
Controlled Labs Oximega
Controlled Labs Greens (for half of the time using it)
TNS Trutein Cinnabun / Myofusion

Mixability
10/10
The first time I took ultima-bol I took them separately to see how they tasted and mixed. The ultima mixed with no residue and the pump-bol only left a slight amount of residue. Together it was the same situation; only a little residue left over from the pump-bol but could easily be washed down with a little more water. I mixed it in a regular cup and didn't even really need to stir with a spoon.

Taste
10/10
Taken separately, pump-bol is the clear winner regarding taste. Ultima was slightly more sour but still not bad at all. Together they are amazing. The pump-bol generally overpowers the flavor of ultima, but it is the best tasting combo of pre-workouts I have ever tasted. The closest thing I can think of is that it tastes like orange tang plus some magic flavor ingredient that makes me look forward to drinking it every time.

Pump
9.5/10
It took about 3 weeks for pump-bol to start kicking in. It was very prevalent from there on out. I actually made a note during the fourth week of using it that the pumps were almost painful and it was hard to get my shirt off after the gym. My muscles definitely stayed pumped and felt full long after my workouts. I gave it a 9.5 because I don't have much experience with pump products so I can't give it a perfect score.

Focus/Endurance
10/10
This is where I feel that this combo really shined. I was entirely focused throughout my workout. My workout times decreased and I found myself not wanting to rest at all between sets. Even on non-workout days I definitely felt an increase in focus and energy making me more awake/alert. Can't wait to start taking it again for this reason alone.

Overall
10/10
I haven't been this impressed with a pre-workout's effectiveness and taste like I have with pump-bol and ultima. I highly recommend giving the combo a try.

March 28, 2012 -- Ground green coffee beans, taken daily, seem to spur steady weight loss, according to new research.

In a small, 22-week study, researchers found that 16 overweight men and women lost an average of 17 pounds. They took the green (unroasted) coffee beans in supplement form and, for comparison, took a placebo at a different point of the study.

They did not change their diet. They were physically active. They lost more while on the supplements than while on placebo. They lost the most when on the higher of two coffee bean doses.

"We don't think it's the caffeine in it," says Joe Vinson, PhD, professor of chemistry at the University of Scranton.

He presented the findings Tuesday at the annual meeting of the American Chemical Society in San Diego. The results echo those of earlier studies, but Vinson used a larger dose of the green coffee beans.

The study included people 22 to 46 years old. It was funded by Applied Food Sciences, which makes the green coffee antioxidant supplement.

The results are interesting, but the study was small and short, so further study is needed, says Connie Diekman, RD, director of university nutrition at Washington University in St. Louis. She reviewed the findings for WebMD.

Vinson and his colleagues gave the men and women in the study a 700-milligram (mg) dose of the ground coffee beans and a 1,050 mg dose. They also gave them a placebo or inactive dose during the 22-week study.

The men and women cycled through each phase for six weeks. In between, they had ''wash-out'' periods where they didn't take any supplement. In this way, they served as their own comparison group.

"Their calories were monitored," Vinson says. They were not put on diets. Calorie intakes stayed about the same during the study. They averaged about 2,400 calories a day -- by no means a weight reduction plan.

They burned, on average, about 400 calories a day in physical activity, Vinson says. The study was done in India.
The 17-pound loss was the average. Some lost only about 7 pounds; others about 26 pounds.
Overall, body weight declined by an average of 10.5%. Body fat declined by 16%.
The study participants lost slightly more weight with the higher dose compared to the lower dose, but not a significant amount with the placebo, Vinson says. Vinson can't say for sure why the coffee bean extract seems to help weight loss. He suspects one explanation is the unroasted beans' chlorogenic acid.

Chlorogenic acid is a plant compound. It may have ''some effect on keeping down glucose absorption," which in turn helps reduce weight, Vinson says.

Once coffee beans are roasted, the chlorogenic acid breaks down.

None of the people in the study reported side effects, Vinson says. The capsules are extremely bitter, he says. They are best taken with a lot of water before a meal, he says.

A larger study of about 60 people is planned, Vinson says.

These findings were presented at a medical conference. They should be considered preliminary, as they have not yet undergone the "peer review" process, in which outside experts scrutinize the data prior to publication in a medical journal.

ScienceDaily (May 2, 2012) — A new study provides a long-sought explanation for the beneficial fat-fighting effects of black pepper. The research, published in ACS' Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, pinpoints piperine -- the pungent-tasting substance that gives black pepper its characteristic taste, concluding that piperine also can block the formation of new fat cells.

Soo-Jong Um, Ji-Cheon Jeong and colleagues describe previous studies indicating that piperine reduces fat levels in the bloodstream and has other beneficial health effects. Black pepper and the black pepper plant, they note, have been used for centuries in traditional Eastern medicine to treat gastrointestinal distress, pain, inflammation and other disorders. Despite that long medicinal history, scientists know little about how piperine works on the innermost molecular level. The scientists set out to get that information about piperine's anti-fat effects.

Their laboratory studies and computer models found that piperine interferes with the activity of genes that control the formation of new fat cells. In doing so, piperine may also set off a metabolic chain reaction that helps keep fat in check in other ways. The group suggests that the finding may lead to wider use of piperine or black-pepper extracts in fighting obesity and related diseases.

The authors acknowledge funding from the National Research Foundation of Korea and the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Family Affairs.

You will need a head for heights when visiting this toilet otherwise it might leave you feeling a little flush.

That's because it is suspended on a glass floor above a 15-storey unused lift shaft.

When the owners of this Mexican penthouse use the toilet or brush their teeth they will be able to look through the floor to the bottom of the shaft. The luxury penthouse is built on top of an old colonial style building in Guadalajara, México, built in the 1970s.

The interior of the home was designed by architects Hernandez Silva Arquitectos who explained that a characteristic feature of the project is the volume that was originally intended for a second elevator, which was never installed and became a powder room with a glass floor that looks all the way down.

The structure of the house is based on columns and slabs which allowed the architects to remove walls creating more space.
A Japanese woman was reunited with her missing pet parakeet Tuesday when the bird began reciting his home address to police.

The parakeet, named Piko, went missing Sunday and was spotted perching on a guest’s shoulder at a nearby hotel, the AFC reported.

Piko was taken to the local police where he stunned the cops by chirping the street address of his home, near Tokyo.

The owner later explained she taught Piko how to say his address and phone number after losing a former pet bird, reported MSNBC.

Parakeets, a type of parrot, can be trained to talk by imitating human words. Savvy parrot owners have used this trick before: In 2008, also in a town near Tokyo, a lost parrot told the veterinarian looking after it "I'm Mr. Yosuke Nakamura." The bird also gave his full address, and the owner was found.

by Mike Arnold Iron Magazine

Getting started in BB’ing can be an overwhelming experience, especially if the individual has minimal education in the areas of training & nutrition. Without proper guidance, the beginner is sure to make numerous progress-halting mistakes. Many aspiring BB’rs waste years of effort on ineffective training programs and unless a concerted attempt is made to educate oneself, most individuals will continue to engage in inferior routines to their own detriment.

While BB’ing may be a rather simple pursuit in comparison to becoming proficient in something like neurosurgery, acquiring the education necessary to reap maximum results from one’s efforts is no small undertaking. In fact, the amount of knowledge applicable to all the different aspects of the bodybuilding experience could not be learned in a lifetime. This makes getting started difficult, as the BB’r must first navigate through vast amounts of information, in order to find and learn the basic principles central to gaining muscle mass and/or strength, before moving onto more advanced material. The learning process is made even more difficult by the large amount of conflicting information which presents itself on almost every subject, making the initial sifting process even more laborious.

In light of the challenges facing the beginning BB’r, having wise counsel available for guidance and direction can prove invaluable. In this article, we will specifically address the training process and how to go about constructing a program which applies the necessary principles for making consistent gains in size & strength.

Almost everyone who starts training will make progress in the beginning stages of their bodybuilding program. The body has never before been exposed to the stresses of weight training and will respond with an almost immediate increase in strength & size. Program set-up matters little during this phase of one’s BB’ing journey, but after a short time, a more well thought out program will be required if one wants to ensure continued progress. It is at this juncture that many BB’rs start to spin their wheels, noticing little return for their efforts. Typically, the BB’r corrects the problem and continues moving forward at an acceptable rate, or he doesn’t and gains come at a snail’s pace, leading to eventual dissatisfaction and loss of motivation to continue training. A small percentage of steadfast individuals will keep on grinding it out under these less than fortunate circumstances, but they are the rarity.

Generally, the first step in putting together a bodybuilding program is deciding on which training split to follow. While there are many different training splits which can be used with success, the novice should stick with those which have been proven effective in helping the largest percentage of beginning lifters. One’s training split will be determined by what days the BB’r chooses to train each body part. See an the example of a 3-Day Training Split below:

3-Day Traditional Split
Monday: Chest, Biceps, Triceps
Wednesday: Legs
Friday: Back, Delts

The 3-Day training split seen above is one of the more effective programs a beginner can utilize for gaining significant amounts of muscle and strength. The program is characterized by lower volume, ample recovery time, and reliance on the basic mass-building exercises. We are getting a little ahead of ourselves here, so let’s slow down and focus on why this spilt is so effective. While this 3 day routine may be considered too streamlined by some standards, most individuals with extensive experience will testify to the effectiveness of this training spilt.

With this split, each body part is trained only once per week and since we are relying primarily on the basic mass-builders, it allows the BB’r to train all his body parts over a 3 day period. By following these guidelines, the body’s ability to recover & grow is optimized. The basic mass-builders are titled as such for a reason…because they typically produce the largest gains in mass & strength in the shortest amount of time. When many other exercises are added into the BB’rs routine, his recovery ability is spread thin and instead of the body spending most of its resources growing, it ends up spending a larger portion of its resources recovering. Every exercise has its place and all can be useful at the right time, but as a beginner, the primary goal is the acquisition of muscle size & strength. Later on down the road, when weak points are being addressed, these other exercises can be of value, but for now the goal is to add as much overall mass as possible.

By sticking with the basics and being able to train all of our body parts over a 3-Day period, we are provided with plenty of days off from the gym. Since growth takes place when resting and not when we are working out, these off days of provide us with the opportunity to experience complete recovery and supercompensation (growth) week after week. BB’rs who make the mistake of thinking more is better and begin training 5-6 days per week, while employing every exercise in the book, will inevitably burn-out and fail to keep pace with their full growth potential.

We have been talking a lot about the “basic mass-building” exercises, but what are they? Below is a list of what are considered most of the “basics”. While not everyone will respond equally to each exercise, due to differences in physical structure, these are the exercises which have proven the most reliable for the largest percentage of trainers. Since the beginning BB’r will have difficulty feeling the mind-muscle connection (which we will get to later) he would do well to stick with only these basics for at least the first 6-8 months of training. By this point the individual should have established a significant mind-muscle connection with these exercises and therefore, he will be better able to use personal experience in order to determine which of these basics, if any, aren’t suitable for him. In the meantime, since the beginner lacks this ability, the following basics should form the core of his routine. * Note: While the BB’r will find greater value in isolation exercises and their variations as training progresses and weak points are addressed, the basics will always form the core of one’s program. They will remain responsible for the retention and continual build-up of additional muscle mass, making them an integral part of a BBr’s program forever.

One of the first questions to be asked when the BB’r finally gets to the gym is…“What order should my exercises performed in?” Generally, the BB’r should move from large to small. When saying one should move from “large to small”, it simply means that the BB’r should train a muscle by beginning with the heaviest, multi-joint exercises and afterwards move onto the lighter, single joint exercises. When performing the multi-joint exercises, they typically require the recruitment of both larger & smaller muscles at the same time. Since the smaller muscles will fatigue more quickly than the larger muscles when performing the multi-joint exercises, the BB’r should make sure the small muscles have all their strength before doing these multi-joint lifts. If the BB’r performs single-joint exercises first, the smaller muscles will already be tired by the time he gets to the multi-joint exercises. This will cause the smaller muscles to fatigue prematurely when doing the multi-joint exercises, preventing the larger muscles from working as hard as possible. An example of improper exercise order would be training triceps before chest. By training triceps before chest, the triceps will become prematurely fatigued and by the time chest is trained, the triceps will fail long before the chest has been worked adequately.

With this abbreviated 3-Day Split, exercise order is not as much of an issue as it might be with other training programs, as most of the exercises included in this program are multi-joint, compound exercises. Still, no routine can be complete without some isolation (single-joint) exercises, so those single-joint exercises which are included in this program should be performed after one has completed all their multi-joint exercises.

A huge mistake of most beginners is utilizing excess training volume. They believe that their level of exertion directly correlates with their progress. To this end, many lifters will employ set after set of various exercises. Since recovery ability is limited (especially for drug-free trainers, which includes most beginners), more frequently than not, this leads to premature stagnation. While enough sets of each exercise should be performed in order for the lifter to learn proper exercise mechanics, excess volume will hold the lifter back.

For this reason, I generally recommend that the lifter perform 3 working-sets of each exercise, which is preceded by an appropriate warm-up. This level of volume is high enough so that the lifter can learn proper exercise mechanics (the ability to perform the exercise correctly), while also being adequate in terms of muscular stress. A greater amount of sets is unlikely to lead to additional gains in muscle tissue or strength, but will impose greater demands on the body’s recovery ability.
When it comes to what rep-range should be employed, beginners should avoid extremes and stick with what has worked for generations of lifters. For the upper-body, this involves keeping the reps between 6-12, while the lower-body seems to respond best to a rep range of 8-15. Being a beginner at one time myself, I understand the desire to want to test one’s strength with lower reps. This OK, as long as the practice does not become a regular occurrence.

Let’s address the topic of rest between sets. While opinions vary significantly on this subject, it is my opinion that longer rest periods are superior for enhanced mass & strength, especially for the beginner, as they allow the individual to handle greater training weights from set to set and exercise to exercise. When rest-periods are too short, exercise failure will come by way of metabolic fatigue, not muscular exhaustion. Since the primary aim of the BB’r is to stress his muscular system and not the cardiovascular system, longer rest periods are a necessity in accomplishing this objective. Since training too quickly will reduce the poundage the BB’r is capable of training with, the result will be reduced muscular stress leading to less growth potential. When performing basic, multi-joint exercises, a rest period of 3-4 minutes is sufficient, while lighter single-joint exercises will only require about 2 or so minutes before it is time for the next set.

Lastly, but of great importance, is the topic of exercise mechanics and the mind-muscle connection. You could be doing everything else correctly, but if you screw-up these two components of the training process, you will badly cripple your results. While exercise mechanics & the mind-muscle connection are closely related, they are two very different things. Exercise mechanics refers to the manner in which you perform an exercise, also known as exercise “form”. The mind-muscle connection is the ability to feel the target muscles working as you perform an exercise.

In terms of inter-dependence, if your form is horrible, it is going to be difficult to develop a mind-muscle connection during training. On the flip side, if you aren’t able to feel a mind-muscle connection when performing an exercise, you will have trouble adjusting the mechanics of that exercise to best suit your own particular structure. Whenever you perform an exercise, it is absolutely vital that you develop a mind-muscle connection with that movement because if you can’t feel the target muscle working, you will not be able to place optimal amounts of stress on that muscle, reducing the potential for growth. With each rep, you should be able to feel the muscle stretch and contract throughout a full range of motion. BB’ing training is not about heaving a weight from point A to point B with as much weight as possible, while using momentum and calling assisting muscle groups into play. The weights are only a tool to achieve muscle growth; it is not about the weight itself.

Sacrificing exercise form just so the lifter can use additional weight is one of the most common beginner mistakes in the entire gym. The cause of this progress pitfall is the ego. Some BB’rs are simply more concerned with looking strong in front of their gym mates, than they are with building up their muscles. Whenever a BB’r uses so much weight that he can no longer feel his muscles working through a full range of motion and his exercise mechanics begin to suffer, he needs to ask himself what is more important to him. Would he rather use a bit less weight and build bigger muscles, or would he rather cheat up heavier weights and end up with smaller muscles?

If you apply the information you’ve found in this article, you will be well on your way to making your goal of increased muscle growth & strength a reality. Remember, consistency is one of the most important attributes you can have when it come to BB’ing and unfortunately, it’s also one of the most neglected. No program will furnish significant results without consistency of effort. The principles presented here will only work if you use them with regularity. Best of luck to you in your BB’ing journey.
NEW CASSEL, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – A Long Island man with a sixth-grade education has been accused of practicing dentistry from his home without having any formal medical or dental training, police said Thursday. Detectives went to Manuel Carranza’s New Cassel home on Wednesday afternoon after receiving a call that the 46-year-old was allegedly operating an unlicensed dental practice out of his residence.

Carranza allegedly bought his dental equipment and tools on the Internet and did not keep anything sterilized, 1010 WINS’ Mona Rivera reported. “Our concern is that there are people that are not in good health as a result of his services,” Det. Lt. Ray Cote said. Carranza allegedly cleaned his tools with dish-washing soap and melted down gold jewelry to be used as dental fillings, WCBS 880′s Sophia Hall reported.

Police believe Carranza treated more than 100 people over a year and half. His attorney insisted Carranza had dental tools but did not practice. Or, as McLogan learned from his attorney, Carranza may be some kind of a collector. “That’s not a crime,” Samuel Reiff said.

If you stroll into this cat’s apartment and let him practice dentistry on you, you deserve everything that comes your way. That dude looks like the complete polar opposite of a dentist. He looks like a disgruntled illegal landscaper or a Mexican drug mule.

But you know what? I’m actually pretty impressed. The fact that this guy probably can’t even read an Amelia Bedelia book but can melt down fillings and do a decent enough dentist impression is fucking impressive. Like that takes some natural talent and a resourcefulness that not many people have.

If this dude put that kind of effort into school he probably would have gone on to graduate and become a real dentist. Sky is the limit for a guy with as many natural gifts as Manuel Carranza. Instead he’s washing screwdrivers and forks in the sink pretending they are dentist equipment and he’s going to jail for pretending to be a doctor. They say the saddest thing in life is a talented Mexican posing as a dentist.

Todd Runestad, Functional Ingredients
Apr. 26, 2012 1:14pm

Whey protein has long been the go-to protein source in the sports nutrition market. But a new study could spell opportunity for other proteins and expand formulations beyond athletes and weekend warriors.

A study out this week could add a new player to the protein market that’s long been dominated by whey.

At the Experimental Biology meeting in San Diego on Monday, Blake Rasmussen, PhD, of the University of Texas Medical Branch, presented findings that show a blend of protein sources—50 percent casein, 25 percent whey, 25 percent soy—was superior to whey alone for prolonging muscle building and recovery after exercise.

“Whey protein has been given considerable notice as the gold standard ingredient after exercise to enhance muscle growth,” Rasmussen said. “The main problem with whey is it’s fast digesting—the anabolic response in muscle is only about an hour. We wanted to prolong the anabolic response with other protein sources. We found muscle protein synthesis is elevated for a longer amount of time with a protein blend versus whey protein.”

The combination of protein blends was determined in Rasmussen's previous preclinical work with rats.

Soy, whey and casein protein are all absorbed at different rates during digestion. Whey protein is referred to as a “fast” protein because it is rapidly absorbed, between 30 and 60 minutes, Rasmussen said. Soy is an intermediate protein, taking between 60 and 120 minutes to digest. And casein is a slow protein, requiring between three and five hours to digest.

“The combination gives you a quick increase in protein synthesis, and it gets sustained,” said Rasmussen. “It’s a prolonged delivery to muscle that the muscles use for recovery.”

The double-blind, randomized clinical trial followed 19 young adults before and after ingestion of about 19 grams of protein from the blend or about 17.5 grams of whey protein alone.

“Your muscles don’t recover in 30 minutes. It takes at least 24 to 48 hours for your muscles to recover after a resistance exercise,” said Greg Paul, global marketing director for sports nutrition and weight management at Solae, a soy supplier that sponsored the study.

Not just for athletes anymore?

It was only five years ago when research showed that protein should be an important part of sports nutrition products. Before then, the game was typically provided by the likes of Gatorade-style drinks: with fast carbs and electrolytes such as potassium and sodium. Whey became the go-to protein source in beverages because it quickly fed muscles. Whey also appears better than soy for producing muscle synthesis because of the presence in whey of the amino acid leucine, which has been shown to uniquely act as a stimulatory signal for muscle protein synthesis. But for athletes and weekend warriors alike, using a blend of protein sources that absorb in the body over time means muscles are being fed until the next meal.

The addition of soy is also important because of soy’s particular properties including as an antioxidant and as an anti-inflammatory, which are both key attributes in muscle building beyond anabolic effects.

And this could lead to the next great demographic for protein products: the elderly.
“Protein blends are useful for sports nutrition,” said Rasmussen, “but also for those interested in aging and maintaining muscle mass as we age. This could potentially be a great intervention for aging.”

To date, products targeting elderly nutrition with protein-centric value propositions are few and far between. The trend of aging baby boomers, coupled with research demonstrating the value of protein blends in maintaining muscle mass, ought to be of interest to marketers and product developers.
