Rumors of a 7.85-Inch 'iPad Mini' Revived (Again) for Late 2012

Thursday December 15, 2011 8:43 pm PST by Arnold Kim

Digitimes once again revives talk of a 7.85-Inch iPad. According to the site, Apple is likely to launch a 7.85-inch iPad prior to 4th quarter of 2012 in addition to a new iPad at the end of the 1st quarter. Apple reportedly is looking to take on the increasing number of competitors such as Android's 7-inch Kindle Fire:However, in order to cope with increasing market competition including the 7-inch Kindle Fire from Amazon and the launch of large-size smartphones from handset vendors, Apple has been persuaded into the development of 7.85-inch iPads, the sources indicated.
There's been enough talk of such a device that it seems certain that Apple has at least been prototyping one over the past year. This previous mockup of such a device was discussed a year ago as a possibility:

Previous mockup of a 7-inch "iPad mini"
Previous rumors have suggested that a 7.85-inch iPad would carry the same resolution (1024x768) as the current iPad. This would open the door to Apple differentiating their new iPad with a much higher resolution Retina display, while offering the old resolution on a physically smaller device.

Given the number of ongoing rumors, it seems certain that Apple has been experimenting with a 7.85-inch iPad. We'd guess its ultimate arrival will depend on how the market responds to the Kindle Fire and similar tablets in the coming year.

That Ipad mini looks very delicious. I was almost considering getting that new Amazon Kindle fire, but then I would regret it one the Ipad mini is out.

Apple may be selling 3 iPad models in January

Apple may be selling 3 iPad models in January

Dec. 29, 2011 (10:33 am) By: Matthew Humphries

Yenting Chen and Ingrid Lee, Taipei; Jessie Shen, DIGITIMES [Thursday 29 December 2011]
Apple is set to unveil its next-generation iPad - which will come in two versions - at the iWorld scheduled for January 26, 2012, according to sources at its supply chain partners. The new models will join the existing iPad 2 to demonstrate Apple's complete iPad series targeting the entry-level, mid-range and high-end market segments, the sources claimed.

The iPad 2 will be competing directly with Amazon's kindle Fire in the price-sensitive market segment, while the new models will focus on the mid-range and high-end segments respectively, the sources said.
Apple officials declined to comment.

Instead of the previously-rumored 7.85-inch, the upcoming iPad models will still feature 9.7-inch screens but come with QXGA resolution (1,536x2,048 pixels), the sources indicated. Dual-LED light bars are designed for the new iPads to strengthen the brightness of the panels, the sources added.

Sharp will be the major panel supplier for Apple's next-generation iPad series, while Samsung Electronics and LG Display are also responsible for a part of the orders, the sources said. Minebea, from which Sharp sources backlight units (BLUs), has accordingly entered the supply chain for the new iPads, the sources pointed out.

Apple continues to contract Samsung to manufacture its quad-core A6 processors, which will be used in the next-generation iPads, the sources revealed. The existing iPad 2 is based on the dual-core A5.
Samsung is also among the CMOS image sensor (CIS) suppliers for one of the versions of the new iPad that comes with a 5-megapixel lens, marking the Korea-based vendor's first time to grab CIS orders from Apple, the sources noted. Sony is the other CIS supplier for the other model with a higher 8-megapixel lens, the sources added.

In addition, Simplo Technology and Dynapack International Technology have both secured orders for batteries with a capacity of as high as 14,000 milliampere-hour (mAh) used in the new iPads, according to the sources.

OnLive Intros Virtual Windows 7 Desktop With Office for iPad

Monday January 9, 2012 2:36 pm PST by Jordan Golson

Video game streaming company OnLive has announced a free, streaming, virtual Microsoft Windows 7 desktop app for the iPad. The OnLive Desktop app, announced at CES, will eventually expand to other platforms -- including the Mac. Users will have access to full-featured versions of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, less than a week after CloudOn introduced its Office solution for the iPad.

GigaOm has details about how the service will work:
Since applications are running on high-end computing clusters in OnLive’s data centers, the only thing holding back performance is the network. Which means that in today’s world of pervasive broadband connectivity, Windows applications running on an iPad could potentially be faster than those running on a standard Windows 7 laptop.

OnLive is making the Desktop app available in a freemium model through which users will get 2GB worth of cloud storage and the ability to use Windows 7 applications such as Word, Excel and Powerpoint, as well as other utilities and games. Documents can be stored in the cloud and accessed from any device with a web interface. In the near future, OnLive expects to launch Onlive Desktop Pro, a more robust service that will offer up 50 GB of storage, priority access, additional apps and other features for $9.99 a month. It also promises collaboration features for enterprise users such as sharing documents or working on virtual whiteboards.

The Verge notes that when they tried the app at OnLive HQ, there was "a little bit of perceptible lag, it's pretty impressive manipulating objects with our fingers and flipping through PowerPoint presentations on a desktop miles away."

OnLive previously announced iPad and iPhone support for its gaming products, though those apps have yet to be publicly released.

Available this Thursday in the U.S. and "soon" in the UK, OnLive Desktop for the iPad will be free on the App Store.

iPad 3 to be announced in early February?

Jan. 17, 2012 (1:46 pm) By: Will Shanklin

Apple fans all the world over are each setting aside $500 or so for the iPad 3. As is always the case with Apple, everything is based on speculation; but we’d be shocked if the company’s latest tablet didn’t show its Retina display come March. Up to this point, speculation has pointed at an early-March announcement, with the launch a week or so later.

According to a new report, however, we may see that iPad 3 earlier than expected. According to alleged Asian supply chain sources and another alleged source in the US, Apple will be announcing the tablet in early February, and launching it about a month later. The story says that Apple’s “Special Event” is already being planned.

Would Apple spring the iPad 3 on us that soon? If it did, it would be swimming against the current of recent history. The company has established a pattern of announcing a product, then launching it about a week and a half later. We see no reason why Apple would suddenly let that gap grow to a full month. It could be that both the announcement and release would happen in February, but we wouldn’t bet the house on that either.

The most likely killer feature in the next iPad is a 2048×1536 Retina display. Those who watched Apple in the summer of 2010 will point out that the 264 pixels per inch of the iPad 3 would fall short of the 300ppi that Steve Jobs used to define a Retina display (when he was pitching the iPhone 4). Apple, however, could easily get around this by saying that a tablet is typically held farther away from the eyes than a smartphone. It’s all marketing semantics, but customers like some consistency on that front.

Other rumored features of the iPad 3 include a quad-core A6 SoC, LTE, upgraded cameras, and a physical design that is either slightly thicker or slightly thinner (depending on what source you trust).

Apple has just announced iBooks 2 for the iPad at its education event in New York City, calling them a "new textbook experience." The newly designed books are graphical, interactive, and make use of features like 3D imaging, embedded video, and multitouch gestures. The company seems to be taking cues from several applications which have been available for the iPad such as Frog Dissection and Solar System, both of which Apple called out at the event.

Small info from "Mac Rumors" website:
- iBooks 2
- These books are amazing, so here is a demo of iBooks 2. Roger Rosner to assist.
- Demoing biology textbook. Dramatic intro movie, multitouch gestures to move through book, 3D models of insides of cells.
- Much more interesting than static sheets of paper. But we need to get it into kids' hands.
- Authors have complete freedom in text and graphics layout. Auto-rotate between portrait and landscape, and we re-layout the content Portrait offers a more traditional text format.
- Pinch to get to table of contents. Easy glossary access and linked index entries.
- Review questions become visual and interactive, and offer immediate feedback.
- Integrated highlighting and notetaking. Automatically turn notes and highlights into study cards. Glossary terms too...can even shuffle the cards.
- How do I get these? New textbook category in the iBookstore. Free samples and one-click purchase.
- Schiller back on stage.
- iBooks 2 available from the App Store for free today.
- So how do you create these books?
- iBooks Author
- Mac application for authoring interactive books. Rosner demoing the book creation process.

Siri will eventually be used for online shopping, according to patent

Jan. 19, 2012 (12:34 pm) By: Will Shanklin

In its initial beta state, Siri has limited functionality. Sure, it’s nice to ask it if you need an umbrella, get a list of driving directions, or to send a text message with your voice. But, five years from now, the voice assistant’s abilities will make its current feature set look primitive.
One of the advances that Apple is planning appears to be related to online shopping. A patent that the company filed just over a year ago reveals a system for buying items online while using only your voice.

The patent, called “Intelligent Automated Assistant,” is more of a patent for Siri than for any isolated features of Siri. It’s a lengthy and detailed breakdown of the technical side of the voice assistant, including GUI, syntax comprehension, filtering of results, and long-term memory.

As fascinating as it is to see the man behind Siri’s curtain, all of that is familiar. What isn’t familiar, however, is the online shopping bit. Apparently Apple wants you to be able to buy things with your voice. The patent notes that Siri could be used for “online purchases of items such as books, DVDs, music and the like.”

So it appears that Siri wouldn’t be limited to digital purchases from Apple. Perhaps Apple will start by letting you buy songs from iTunes, books from iBooks, and apps from the App Store. But then, after customers have gotten used to that, it could expand to include retail stores like Best Buy, Amazon, or (of course) the Apple Store. Siri could potentially have a filtering feature, where it will automatically order an item from the outlet with the lowest price or fastest shipping.

Why would Apple bother with this? This could give the company immense power in the online shopping realm. If you want Apple to include you in Siri shopping, you have to play ball with Apple in a number of ways.

It would also potentially let Apple suggest items from its own stores over those of rivals. For example, if you asked for a Magsafe charger for your MacBook Air, it would dissuade you from buying a cheaper third-party unit from Amazon, and take you to the Apple Store for a new OEM accessory.

Of course Apple patents a huge number of things for every one that makes it into a product. But since this is really a patent for Siri, the prominent featuring of online shopping is likely giving us a glimpse of what Cupertino has in store for its voice assistant.

Siri will eventually be used for online shopping, according to patent

Foxconn employee tells us that the next iPhone is ready for production, indicates likely summer launch

Seth Weintraub
inShare47

January 25, 2012 at 8:49 am

We received word from a reliable source at Foxconn in China that the iPhone 5, as it is currently being called, is now gearing for production. The source said various sample devices are also floating around (they vary slightly from one another), so it is impossible to tell which one will be the final. Some things in common with all of them, however, are:
  • 4+ inch display (made by LG on at least one of them).
  • No teardrop-shaped devices, as rumored in the lead up to the iPhone 4S. Samples so far have been symmetrical in thickness (also longer/wider).
  • Neither of the sample devices have the iPhone 4/4S form factor.
  • Neither of the devices are the final versions.
We also heard the non-teardrop and 4-inch display information previously in a report from iLounge, but what is important to note here is that iPhone 4S production did not gear up until late spring of last year. If we follow patterns and give a five month-ish lead time, it would appear that Apple is back on its new iPhone launch for summer/WWDC pattern that it maintained until last year.

We are still a long way off however.

This source is the same that indicated to us late last summer that the iPhone 5 was not happening against the prevailing tide of information, and that Apple was building the iPhone 4S model instead. (Love the comments in that post, by the way.)

Rogers and BCE Already Have the Apple iTV in Their Labs, Controlled with Voice and Hand Gestures

Monday February 6, 2012 5:49 pm PST by Arnold Kim

The Globe and Mail reports that Apple is actively seeking launch partnerships with Canada's Rogers Communications and BCE Inc. to offer their upcoming Apple TV. “They’re not closed to doing it with one [company] or doing it with two,” said one source who is familiar with the talks. “They’re looking for a partner. They’re looking for someone with wireless and broadband capabilities.”

According to the newspaper, these companies already have the Apple iTV in their labs.

Siri voice control is reportedly integrated into Apple's new television to help viewers make programming choices. Viewers can then control the TV with voice or hand gestures. Even an on-screen keyboard can be invoked without any special hardware (emphasis ours):An on-screen keyboard, meanwhile, can also be activated in a similar manner, allowing viewers to surf the web, conduct video chats and use social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook – all without any physical interface.

The paper isn't clear about the sourcing of the details for the hand gesture control, and later cites an analyst for some other details. They do seem to specifically have a source with knowledge of the matter.

The Globe and Mail is Canada's largest-circulation national newspaper.

Apple patents eye-tracking 3D technology for iPhone, iPad, or Mac

Feb. 9, 2012 (6:02 pm) By: Will Shanklin

3D is among the least liked technologies for many geeks. Sure, it can be cool to add an extra dimension to your content, but it’s been pushed so clumsily by TV and gadget manufacturers that it feels more like a forced gimmick than an exciting new way of interacting with content. The eye strain that it often induces doesn’t exactly help either.

With that in mind, you may want to take this with a few extra grains of salt. Apple has patented a method of presenting 3D content on its devices that wouldn’t require glasses or even a stereoscopic display. It uses various sensors that are already in the devices to determine the device’s point in space in relation to the position of your eyes, and adjust the image accordingly.

We’ve seen similar approaches to 3D before, but this takes it farther. There’s actually a demonstrative app (called i3D) in the App Store that shows off a similar approach to 3D. It uses the front facing camera to track your face, and adjust the image to create the illusion of 3D. Apple’s approach, though, makes that look downright primitive.

The patent details a method of using a device’s accelerometer, GPS, compass, and gyrometer to establish a precise point in space for the device. It would then locate the user’s eyes (presumably with the front-facing camera) and combine all of this data to create a precise presentation of 3D content.

The patent continues to display how Apple could use layers of UI elements to contribute to the 3D effect. You may not have noticed, but icons on iOS devices’ homescreens have subtle drop shadows. One simple example of this tech would be to adjust (in real time) the position of the drop shadow in relation to the icon. Voila: instant 3D.

One of the coolest parts of Apple’s patent is that the 3D would be activated with a 3D gesture. So, say you’re using your iPhone as usual (2D), and you want to kick it into 3D. Make a Jedi-like wave of your hand in front of the display, and 3D mode is activated.

Of course it’s possible that Apple won’t bother with this. The patent was originally filed in late 2010, as Nintendo was gearing up for the 3DS release and rumors were circulating of HTC using 3D in the next EVO. Both of those devices ultimately struggled to catch on with customers, so Apple may have since scrapped or shelved these plans.

3D has been hit-or-miss with customers, and it’s probably despised at least as often as it’s embraced. Apple does, however, have a way of making customers embrace features that they hadn’t given much regard to before. It will be interesting to see whether this makes it into the iPhone 6, iPad 4, or mid-2013 MacBook Air.

Confirmed: iPad 3 Has a 2048x1536 Retina Display

Friday February 17, 2012 1:32 pm PST by Eric Slivka
Over the past couple of months, several photos of displays claimed to be for the iPad 3 have surfaced from various sources. Such parts leaks are typical with the device's expected debut early next month. While reports have claimed that these displays are high-resolution "Retina" displays, there has been no definite confirmation of these claims so far.

MacRumors has now been able to obtain one of these iPad 3 displays and examine it under a microscope in an effort to determine whether it is indeed an ultra-high resolution Retina display. Physically, the purported iPad 3 display is the same size as the current iPad 1 and iPad 2 display at 9.7" in diagonal, and looks quite similar to the naked eye.

However, when comparing the iPad 3 display to one from an iPad 2 under a microscope, the difference in resolutions becomes readily apparent, with the iPad 3 display's pixels appearing to be one-quarter the size of those on the iPad 2.

Since we only had a raw iPad 3 display with no method to power it, taking high quality photos of the pixels was difficult. Still, even with the relatively poor lighting, you can easily make out the pixels on each display (made up of red, green and blue elements). We highlighted a cluster of 4 pixels (2x2) from the iPad 2 to compare it to the same area on the iPad 3. On the iPad 3, the same cluster was occupied by 16 pixels (4x4) -- exactly twice the resolution in each direction.

Extrapolating out, the iPad 3 screen should carry a full resolution of 2048x1536, exactly twice the linear resolution of the iPad 1 and iPad 2 which is 1024x768. Such a screen should be able to display much sharper images as compared to the previous generation iPads.

Apple is expected to introduce the iPad 3 with a media event on March 7, and the device is rumored to be carrying this high-resolution display, a new A6 system-on-a-chip, and LTE support for models with cellular data capabilities.

iPad 3 with More Tapered Edge and an 8 Megapixel Back Camera?

Saturday February 18, 2012 9:12 pm PST by Arnold Kim
NextMedia / Apple Daily claims to have received the following photos and information through "special channels". The photo below shows what is claimed to be an overview shot of the new iPad 3 back enclosure (top of image) as well as a comparison shot between the original iPad, the iPad 2 and the New iPad (inset). (via Apple.pro)

The shell should look familiar as it seems to be the same part we previously published. The lighting, however, is much better in this shot, and reveals the more subtle changes. There are notably no markings on the back of the case besides the Apple logo, itself.

The iPad 3 enclosure seems to have a more gradual taper to the edges than the iPad 2. The taper is seen better on the top overview photograph. As a result of this longer taper, the iPad 3's camera rests on the taper itself. We saw this before but due to the dark lighting of that image, the taper seemed more exaggerated.

The absolute positioning of the camera doesn't seem that far off from the iPad 2, but the lens does appear larger. According to NextMedia, the new iPad 3 camera will see a significant upgrade to 8 megapixels. The current iPad 2 back camera is 1 megapixel in resolution. The site also summarizes many of the other expectations for the iPad 3, such as an improved display, quad-core CPU, and a March 7th announcement date.

We've seen a rumor from the site only once before. They predicted new MacBooks, MacBook Pros and MacBook Air models back in April 5, 2010. The MacBook Pros (alone) did launch 8 days after that report, though some of the details (hard drive sizes) didn't match up to the report. Overall, the images here seem to match up to other parts that have been floating around China. Apple Daily is described, however, as a "tabloid-style" newspaper, but the Hong Kong edition is said to be quite popular as the second best selling publication.

iPhone 5 Due for Release in September-October Timeframe?

Japanese blog Macotakara today reports that it has learned from a "reliable" source that Apple is targeting another September or October release for the iPhone this year, continuing a shift away from the mid-year launches seen prior to 2011 and yielding an approximately 12-month upgrade cycle for the iPhone 4S. The report also claims that Apple intends for the later timeframe to be part of Apple's long-term plans for iPhone launches.According to Asian reliable source, next iPhone will be released in September or October , and this cycle seems to be kept for years.

MacRumors has similarly heard from a representative of a supplier known to provide parts for the iPhone that Apple's ordering plans are pointing toward a launch of new hardware in the September.

A third source also claimed to iMore last week that Apple is targeting an October launch for an LTE-enabled iPhone 5, with that source also apparently having accurately named March 7 as the date of Apple's iPad 3 media event. Apple has yet to officially announce that iPad 3 event, but the date has been confirmed as accurate by the well-connected Jim Dalrymple at The Loop.

The claims of a September or October launch for the iPhone 5 directly contradict several previous rumors that had claimed Apple would be releasing the iPhone this summer, presumably at its Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco. That event that may be held during the week of June 11-15 this year, meaning that a product launch in the weeks after such an introduction would result in a very short lifecycle of only eight months for the iPhone 4S. Consequently, many have believed that Apple will indeed hold off on the iPhone 5 launch until later in the year as it did in 2011.

iPad 3 event official: March 7 in San Francisco

Apple has sent out media invites for a March 7 media event in San Francisco where it will likely unveil the next iPad.

"We have something you really have to see. And touch," the invitation reads.
The event will be held at San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center for the Arts next Wednesday at 10 am. The venue has been used by Apple for several major product launches in the past few years.

This almost certainly confirms the latest reports of a March 7 unveiling of the so-called iPad 3.
Now that Apple has announced the event, speculation is bound to go wild. Among the pervasive rumors about the third-generation tablet are that it will feature an ultra-high resolution "retina" display, 4G LTE connectivity, better cameras, a thinner form factor, and new ARM chipsets, possibly Apple's first quad-core System-on-a-Chip to power an iOS-based device.

The iPad 2 did not get an upgraded display, so a retina display (or something very close) similar to that of the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S has been one of the most buzzed-about possible additions to the tablet. MacRumors recently reported that the new iPad has twice the pixels as the displays for the original iPad and iPad 2.

While those might sit atop many wish lists, PCMag Editor-in-Chief Dan Costa has weighed in with a list of things he doesn't need in the new iPad.

Regardless of what's in the device, it seems that people are eager to snap them up. Forty-eight percent of respondents to a recent online survey said they will buy an iPad 3, even those with the Amazon Kindle Fire.

For more, see Why You Should Wait to Buy the Next iPad and an iPad 3 rumor roundup. Also check out PCMag's full review of the iPad 2 and the slideshow below.
PCMag will be at the March 7, so stay tuned for all the details.

The new iPad gets torn apart

Mar. 16, 2012 (9:15 am) By: Matthew Humphries

iFixit have gone above and beyond by flying to Australia and queuing up to get one of the first new iPads just to dismantle it. And as they have come to expect, Apple has continued the tradition of making the tablet very difficult to disassemble and therefore repair outside of an Apple Store.

There is no doubt that the new iPad is going to sell millions of units, and while Apple benefits the most in terms of profit from those sales, there’s a few component manufacturers doing well out of the tablet, too.

Samsung looks to be supplying the beautiful new Retina display, at least for this first batch of tablets. Broadcom has multiple chips inside including an 802.11 wireless chip, an I/O controller, and microprocessor. Elpidia has supplied the 1GB of RAM, and Texas Instruments has a device driver in there too. Qualcomm supply the power management, 3G/4G transceiver, and wireless modem, Toshiba has a memory chip on board as well as being the flash memory supplier, and there’s further silicon provided by Triquint, Avago, and Skyworks.

If you’re wondering how quickly Apple manages to get launch day iPads manufactured, the A5X processor gives us a big hint. It has a manufacturing date of the first week of 2012, suggesting Apple was preparing component stocks for nearly 3 months at least.

The big addition to the new iPad, and by big I mean large, is the new battery. The iPad 2 only carried a 25-watt hour unit, but the new iPad fits in a 42.5 watt hour replacement. It offers up similar battery life to its predecessor, demonstrating how much extra juice that high resolution screen and new processor require.

Of course, if you’re queuing up for an iPad today all you really care about is booting it up and taking in that new display. It’s certainly the main (only?) reason to consider it over the iPad 2, and for an extra $100 Apple has rendered the decision that much easier to make.

Slimmer 13-Inch and 15-Inch MacBook Pros Reportedly in Production

Friday March 16, 2012 6:30 am PDT by Eric Slivka
Claims of redesigned MacBook Pro models continue to surface ahead of the official launch of Intel's Ivy Bridge chips, and Digitimes now reports that slimmer versions of the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pro are currently in production. Notably, the report claims that the MacBook Pro line will remain distinct from the MacBook Air line, with the new MacBook Pro models losing their optical drives but retaining more advanced specs than seen in the MacBook Air.The MacBook Pro will no longer have an optical drive enabling thinner designs, the sources indicated. Despite the slim profile, the new devices will feature more advanced specs than the MacBook Air in terms of CPU performance and storage capacity, the sources said.

Production for the next-generation MacBook Pro has already begun with shipments to Apple kicking off in March, the sources noted. Monthly shipments will eventually climb to 900,000 units from the 100,000-150,000 units targeted initially, the sources said.
The report is very similar to one issued by Digitimes several weeks ago, but the new report offers the explicit claim that production on the new models has indeed begun.

For roughly a year we've been hearing word that Apple was working on a slimmer form factor for the MacBook Pro. Rumors have continued to pile up since that time, with some suggesting that Apple might gradually unify its notebook line with the release of a 15-inch "MacBook Air" in the near future being followed by a similar 17-inch model a few months later. But rumors have been split on whether Apple's larger notebooks would become true MacBook Airs or if they would retain the MacBook Pro name and more advanced specs while still adopting some of the MacBook Air design aesthetics.

Apple rumored to be working on a hardware gaming controller

By Simon Sage, Monday, Apr 2, 2012 at 1:46 pm

Rumor has it that Apple is quietly tinkering with a new device dedicated to making gaming easier on iOS devices. During their 2012 iPad review, AnandTech mentioned:
I know of an internal Apple project to bring a physical controller to market, but whether or not it will ever see the light of day remains to be seen. As smartphones and tablets come close to equalling the performance of current game consoles, I feel like the controller problem must be addressed.
The best third-party attempt at hardware remotes dedicated to mobile that I’ve seen to date is Zeemote. but if Apple ends up providing native Bluetooth connection support for standard game controllers like the PS3′s, it may circumvent the need for Apple to make anything themselves. Personally, I think the Wii remote would be best suited for the job, at least from a style standpoint.

Apple is most definitely targeting gaming consoles with the new iPad, so the possibility isn’t too far-out. Still, any game which makes use of AirPlay basically turns the iOS device into a controller while the image is beamed to your TV.

If this Apple project actually comes to fruition, I worry that it will be some bastardized version of the Apple TV remote that isn’t remotely ergonomic like the mock-up above, but until we get some more fuel for this rumour, that’s not something we have to worry about for the immediate future. Besides that, who knows if it will be used with iOS, or will just be another Apple TV peripheral.

Gamers, how much are you hurting for an Apple-approved dedicated controller? What kind of controller would you like? Are touchscreen controls good enough for you as they are?

Apple rumored to be testing 1GB, A5X-variant powered iPhone, readying next generation iPod touch

By Rene Ritchie, Monday, Apr 9, 2012 at 1:28 pm

We’ve already heard quite a bit about the next generation iPhone, but now reports are surfacing about its processor and RAM as well. Just as they did last year, when Apple seeded Apple A5 powered iPhone 4 devices for testing prior to releasing the iPhone 4S, Apple is now rumored to be seeding Apple A5X powered devices for testing prior to this fall’s new iPhone release. Since this A5X chip won’t need to power a new iPad-style Retina display, there will be some differences according to 9to5Mac‘s Mark Gurman.
Instead, the iPhone prototypes that we’re talking about have a variation of the A5X’s S5L8945X architecture. Like the A5X-powered iPad, these new iPhone prototypes are packing 1GB of RAM. This prototype is labeled N96 internally, but we’re not sure if this internal codename will carry over to the actual next-generation iPhone. Again, this iPhone that we are describing is an internal-only unit built for testing the performance of a new chip in an iPhone, not an actual phone that Apple will produce.
The new iPhone is rumored to be on a fall release schedule and also include LTE networking, a new micro-dock connector port, and a screen size of 3.5-inches or slightly bigger.
They’ve also gotten word on the next generation iPod touch, Apple went all of 2012 without introducing an upgraded iPod touch, so what have they been up to?
According to a file inside of an internal iOS 5.1 build, Apple is working on a fifth-generation iPod touch that is labeled iPod 5,1 internally. We haven’t heard any specifics regarding the new iPod touch hardware, but the jump from 4,1 (the current internal iPod touch label) to 5,1 indicates major internal changes, at the very least.
If I were to guess, the iPod touch 5,1 would be to the upcoming iPhone 5,1 as the iPod touch 4 was to the iPhone 4 in 2010. Apple typically announces new iPod hardware in the fall, just in time for the all-important holiday shopping quarter.

iPhone 4S six months later

By Rene Ritchie, Saturday, Apr 14, 2012 at 9:11 pm

The editors and friends of iMore and Mobile Nations weigh in on the reliability and relevance of Apple’s 2011 iPhone 4S six months after release

6 months ago Apple released the iPhone 4S. Some of us bought it immediately. Some of us waited. Some of us still haven’t decided. Since Apple only releases one new phone a year — if that — the longevity of any new iPhone model is really important. So we polled the staff here at iMore, our compatriots from the Mobile Nations network, and our friends from the podcasts to find out how the iPhone 4S was holding up. Are we still happy? Is it still our one and only? Or with all the hot new devices on other platforms, are we harboring any secret lust in our hearts?

Apple Reportedly Looking to Launch 'iPad Mini' Priced at $249-$299 in Q3

Monday April 16, 2012 6:22 am PDT by Eric Slivka

Kotaku reports on claims [Google translation] from Chinese web portal NetEase regarding Apple's plans for the launch of a smaller "iPad mini" in the third quarter of this year. According to the report, Apple is planning to launch with six million units of the device at a price of either $249 or $299 in order to combat forthcoming Windows 8 products, although smaller Android tablets such as Amazon's Kindle Fire have also been viewed as targets for Apple.NetEase claimed that the device will be released around the third quarter of this year to "counter attack" the upcoming Windows tablets. The report further claims that the devices will cost anywhere from US$249 to $299 and that there will be an initial 6 million units ready for launch.

The well-connected John Gruber has claimed that Apple has a 7.85-inch iPad in its labs, but he does not know whether the product will ever make it to market. Various claims of Apple moving closer to production of the smaller iPad have also been surfacing as rumors continue to swirl.

Mockup of 7.85-inch "iPad mini" next to iPad 2 (courtesy of CiccareseDesign)

Last December, we posted a paper mockup showing what a 7.85-inch iPad would look and feel like, coming to the conclusion that onscreen elements would remain usable even as the standard iPad resolution of 1024x768 was squeezed into a 7.85-inch display rather than a 9.7-inch screen. A 7.85-inch "iPad mini" display with a resolution of 1024x768 would carry a pixel density of 163 pixels per inch, exactly the same density as the non-Retina iPhone and iPod touch models. Consequently, content meeting Apple's interface guidelines would display at acceptable sizes on such a display.
