First Official Press Shot of Ashton Kutcher as Steve Jobs Released, 'jOBS' to Premiere at Sundance

Monday December 3, 2012 4:05 pm PST by Jordan Golson\

Along with an announcement that the Ashton Kutcher-led jOBS [sic] will premiere this winter at the Sundance Film Festival, the festival has also released the first official image of Kutcher as Steve Jobs.

From Vanity Fair magazine:
Courtesy of the Sundance Film Festival, which, just moments ago, announced that jOBS—weird capitalization choice theirs, not ours—would premiere at this year’s festival, the photo shows the Two and a Half Men lead in a cubicle. Outfitted in a button-down shirt, jeans, and a goatee—Kutcher’s Jobs, who leans against a desk in front of a poster bearing the IBM slogan THINK—bears an eerie resemblance to a vintage photo of an actual Steve Jobs floating around on the Internet. That vintage photo also features Steve Jobs’s Jobs in a button-down shirt, jeans, and a goatee, leaning against a desk in front of a poster bearing the IBM slogan THINK.
It was announced earlier this year that Kutcher would play the iconic CEO in an independent film that is separate from the Sony project that will be based on Walter Isaacson's autobiography. That film is being written by West Wing and Newsroom scribe Aaron Sorkin.

Sundance's description of the film:
jOBS / U.S.A. (Director: Joshua Michael Stern, Screenwriter: Matt Whiteley) — The true story of one of the greatest entrepreneurs in American history, jOBS chronicles the defining 30 years of Steve Jobs’ life. jOBS is a candid, inspiring and personal portrait of the one who saw things differently. Cast: Ashton Kutcher, Dermot Mulroney, Josh Gad, Lukas Haas, J.K. Simmons, Matthew Modine. CLOSING NIGHT FILM
The 2013 Sundance Film Festival will take place in Park City, Utah from January 17th through the 27th.

Google Updates YouTube for iOS App, Adds iPad, AirPlay, iPhone 5 Support

Google has updated the YouTube for iOS app, adding native support for the iPad and the iPhone 5, as well as full support for streaming videos via AirPlay, reports The Next Web.

Quote:
Google's Horia Ciurdar says that more than 25 percent of all YouTube watching happens on mobile. Since the launch of the YouTube app back in September, Ciurdar says Google has "been hard at work to improve the app based on your feedback."

Now the YouTube app will get 'enhanced' AirPlay support, letting you shoot your videos over to your Apple TV. Videos are also said to start faster and play more smoothly. Google has also improved VoiceOver support for those with visual impairments.
During the iOS 6 Beta, Apple removed the native YouTube app that had been included on every iOS device since the platform was introduced. Once iOS 6 was publicly announced, Google released a native YouTube app for the iPhone.

YouTube for iOS is available as a free download from the App Store. [Direct Link]

Tim Cook changes tune, television now 'an area of intense interest'

By Terrence O'Brien posted Dec 6th, 2012 at 9:10 AM 13
http://www.engadget.com

It's a hobby. That's basically what we've been told about the Apple TV since day one. Cupertino saw the device as an accessory to its ecosystem, not necessarily a marquee product. Tim Cook is singing a slightly different tune these days, though. After reaffirming the Apple TV's hobby status back in January, he recently told NBC's Brian Williams that the screen in your living room is now "an area of intense interest." The CEO isn't necessarily talking about the Apple TV as we know it today, he could be referring to the long rumor Apple-branded television set, but we wouldn't hold our breath on that one. Of course, in following the tradition set forth by his predecessor Cook left plenty of mystery for the media to poke at. The TV is stuck 30 years in the past, but if you ask what Apple plans to do about it you'll just the line about "intense interest" and a quick, "I can't say more than that." He's slippery son of a gun.

Tim Cook Speaks About Apple Maps, Samsung, and Apple's Future in TV Interview with Brian Williams

Tim Cook has held the reins at Apple for over a year now, and this evening, he gave his first official television interview with Brian Williams on NBC's Rock Center, where he spoke about his role as CEO after Steve Jobs, lamented about the Maps debacle, and revealed a few hints about what's to come for Apple in the future. The full video is embedded below.

The first part of the interview focused on his first year as CEO, and what it was like to follow in the footsteps of former Apple CEO Steve Jobs. Cook was humble and personable as he explained that Jobs taught him to "just do what's right."

When asked about Apple's Maps application, which has faced significant criticism and resulted in the restructuring of the company, Cook told Williams that Apple "screwed up," and is "putting the weight of the company behind correcting it."

Part 1
Cook also touched on the ongoing conflict between Samsung and Apple, after Williams played a Samsung commercial for the Galaxy S3 that attacks Apple's iPhone, branding it as uncool. Quote:

We love our customers. And we'll fight to defend them with anyone. Is it thermonuclear war? The reality is, is that we love competition, at Apple. We think it makes us all better. But we want people to invent their own stuff.

In one interesting section of the interview, Williams asked Cook if Apple would last, and how the company would avoid becoming like Sony, popular in the 80's and 90's before fading into the background. Cook reiterated Apple's drive to focus on a small number of products.
Quote:

We're very simple people at Apple. We focus on making the world's best products and enriching people's lives. I think some companies -- maybe even the one that you mention, maybe they decided that they could do everything. We have to make sure, at Apple, that we stay true to focus, laser focus -- we know we can only do great things a few times, only on a few products.

The juiciest details of the exchange between Williams and Cook, which were leaked in teasers earlier this afternoon, came in the second part of the interview, where Williams focused on the Apple television, the death of Steve Jobs, and the U.S. production of Apple products.

Part 2
Cook commented on the much rumored Apple television set, mentioning, as revealed earlier, Apple's "intense interest" in the market, but he revealed little beyond that, speaking cryptically about his love of "The Jetsons." Quote:

It's a market that we see, that has been left behind. You know, I used to watch "The Jetsons" as a kid. I love "The Jetsons." We're living "The Jetsons" with this. It's an area of intense interest. I can't say more than that. But ...

He also went into more detail about Apple's plans to bring production back to the United States, confirming that next year, one of the Mac lines will be produced in the United States. Quote:

You know, this iPhone, as a matter of fact, the engine in here is made in America. And not only are the engines in here made in America, but engines are made in America and are exported.

The glass on this phone is made in Kentucky. And so we've been working for years on doing more and more in the United States. Next year, we will do one of our existing Mac lines in the United States.

Williams ended the interview trying to get a few more tidbits on Apple's plans for the future, but this is all Cook had to say: Quote:

Our whole role in life is to give you something you didn't know you wanted. And then once you get it, you can't imagine your life without it. And you can count on Apple doing that.

Could Apple be moving to introducing products twice a year?

Posted: 10 Dec 2012, 05:03, by Victor H.
phonearena.com

While Apple’s chief executive Tim Cook is doing the rounds in the media these days speaking on how Apple changed in his first year or so, the company’s former CEO, John Sculley, might have just made it into the spotlight with some extremely interesting comments.

First, Sculley thinks Apple is managed extremely well at the moment. That is hardly a surprise given Tim Cook’s background.

Second and most importantly, though, Cook might have plotted a groundbreaking change in just how aggressive Apple is. How? By moving to introducing products not once, but twice a year.
"I think they're going through a very significant change now in terms of product cycles," Sculley said. "Traditionally Apple introduces products once a year; now it's really introducing products twice a year. The complexity of that from a supply chain is immense, and Apple seems to be doing it well. So, I think that people are underestimating just how well Apple is run, and just how successful the company can be when it gets to that twice-a-year product introduction cycle."

Now, this is just a suggestion, but a very curious one. Apple introducing the fourth generation iPad nearly six months after the launch of the original is unprecedented, and that’s the first sign of what could we have in the future.

And now, Horace Dediu of Asymco weighs in with 6 more interesting facts that could hint to Apple moving to semi-annual production.

First, comes the fact that Apple has ramped up the iPhone 5 launch quicker and wider than ever. The new iPhone is launching in an unparalleled number of countries, and with almost no delay for markets outside the U.S. This means that unlike previously, Apple won’t benefit from sales to new markets as the fiscal year goes.

Next, consumer anticipation to the company’s yearly cadence is drying up sales for a quarter or two prior to the launch of a new device.

Also, Hon Hai, a company you know by its Foxconn trade name, has moved locations closer to workers. And this allows it to rely less on migrant labor, and be steadier in terms of workforce.

Could all of this mean that Apple is indeed moving to a semi-annual product cycles? This could be a huge change for the industry, and the first big Tim Cook move. What are your thoughts on this, is it possible and what would be the ramifications?

Roundup of Features in Google Maps for iOS: Better Design than Android Version, iPad Version Coming

The much-anticipated Google Maps for iOS is finally here. The app offers iOS 6 users who are unhappy with Apple's in-house Maps app an opportunity to switch back to Google's map platform. The new app includes turn-by-turn navigation, public transit directions, Google local search and more.

There are a number of features and tidbits that come with Google Maps for iOS as well. Here's a selection.

- Jesse Hollington notes on Twitter that Google Maps is now a transit routing app option that is linked from Apple's Maps app.

- Google has created the Google Maps for iOS SDK, which allows developers to feature Google Maps in their applications rather than Apple Maps. Developers can do this in two ways. The first uses a URL scheme so developers can have their apps launch Google Maps to complete a search, show a map or Street View imagery, or view walking, driving and public transportation navigation easily.*There are also API keys that allow developers to feature information like traffic navigation and general maps navigation.

- Google's blog post on the app notes that Google Maps for iOS supports iOS 5.1 and higher, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4. Apple's turn-by-turn voice navigation does not support iOS 5 and those two iPhone models.

- A horizontal two-finger swipe allows you to access a menu that shows traffic, public transit, satellite view and Google Earth (which sends you to the Google Earth app).

- The app is available for 40 countries in 29 different languages, according to Google's blog post.

- KamenLee notes you can shake your iPhone (in frustration) which will trigger a Feedback form to Google.

Notes from David Pogue's Review:

- Google's point-of-interest database allows you, for example, to read a restaurant review on Zagat, read the menu, book reservations and see interior photos at 100 restaurants.

- Pogue also notes there's a Compass Mode that allows you, at certain locations, to move your phone around and allow you to see the interior of a business on your screen.

- Google has added some Google Earth features to the iOS app, including the entire photographic model of the Earth and its oceans

- Pogue mentions that Google admits that the iOS app is better than the Android version in terms of design. The Verge says that Google told them that they took everything they learned about design and used it for this app.

- iPad version is coming

iOS version is available as a free download from the App Store. [iTunes Link]

Apple to enhance resolution of next-generation iPad mini, say sources

Julian Ho, Taipei; Alex Wolfgram, DIGITIMES [Thursday 13 December 2012]

Apple's next-generation iPad mini will focus mostly on enhancing the device's display resolution, according to Taiwan-based backlighting industry sources.

The sources have yet to specify whether the device will use Apple's Retina Display technology to enhanced resolution, but market observers said it is highly likely based on the development of past Apple products such as the iPhone and 9.7-inch iPad series.

That means if the iPad mini uses Apple's current Retina Display technology, it will have a 2058 by 1536 resolution and 326ppi.

Meanwhile, the sources also said that Apple will restructure the lighting of the next-generation 9.7-inch iPad from two LED light bars to one in order to decrease the device's overall weight

Let the rumor games begin: next iPhone to sport more than one LED flash, and with blue tint to boot

Phonearena.com
Posted: 18 Dec 2012, 06:33, by Daniel P.

Remember that nutty patent for multiple LED flash "dots" arranged in a pattern that Apple filed for two years ago? Well, it seems that the time might have come for Cupertino to use some of that innovation in an iPhone already, as a one-source rumor claims.

The next iPhone is supposedly going to feature more than one LED flash "dot", and there will be different coloring, too, with a flash displaying a slight blue tint, which is there to help with getting the perfect white balance measurements.

The premise of the patent was also to get light with different intensity and different angles adjusted to the various scenes that appear in front of your lens, so that might be a piece of the puzzle, too.

How is this supposed to work we'll leave to the camera processing algorithm gurus to explain, and until we get a second or third confirmation from somewhere else, consider this just the opening season for the iPhone 5S, or whatever it gets named, rumor hunting. See the Apple multiple LED flash array patent in the scheme below.

Apple TV tests underway at Hon Hai

FOCUS TAIWAN - Taiwan Breaking News, Cross-Strait, Business, Culture, Technology, World
2012/12/19 21:10:07

Taipei, Dec. 19 (CNA) Initial testing of Apple Inc.'s television sets have gotten underway at Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., a source at the Taiwan-based company said Wednesday.

Foreign news media have reported recently that Apple is working with Hon Hai, the main assembler of the U.S. consumer electronics giant's iconic iPhones and iPads, to test several designs for its long-talked-about TVs.

Hon Hai, the world's largest contract electronics maker, has declined to respond to the reports, saying that it never comments on specific business deals with any single client.

However, the Hon Hai source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the initial phase of tests on the TVs has kicked off.

Nevertheless, the source said it is unlikely that shipments of the appliances will begin as soon as the end of next year.

The source also predicted that Apple TV shipments could be huge and that new Apple TV-related products might be put on display at the well-known international consumer electronics trade fair, CES, to be held in Las Vegas in January.

Asked whether the new Apple TV will use display panels produced by Japan's Sharp Corp., the source said the possibility is not high.

According to the source, Apple's new TVs will need flat panels ranging between 46 inches and 55 inches, which means that Hon Hai will not need to get its supply exclusively from Sharp.

Hon Hai Chairman Terry Gou's investment company holds a stake in a liquid-crystal-display factory owned by Sharp, Sakai International Operation, which focuses on producing 60-inch LCD panels.

The Hon Hai source said Apple's new TVs will probably use flat panels produced by either Japanese or Taiwanese suppliers.

"We have not yet confirmed the LCD panel supply source with our client," he said.

Apple CEO Tim Cook told NBC News recently that the company's interest in TV has grown beyond a "hobby."

"It's an area of intense interest," Cook said.

Report claims next-gen, thinner, lighter full-sized iPad due in March with iPad mini design elements

9to5Mac
12/24/2012

Even with Apple’s launch of the fourth-generation iPad last month, Apple is rumored to be preparing to launch yet another new iPad in the coming months. According to Macotakara, a thinner, lighter version of the iPad with 9.7-inch display is due in March 2013.
According to my inside source, iPad(5th) may be released in March, 2013. Source told that, design of this new iPad will be like iPad mini in detail, and be thinner and lightweight. (The expectation comes to have a small 4mm in height, 17mm in width, depth 2mm).
This release would be a year after the launch of the third-generation iPad. Apple’s first three generations of its tablet followed a March/April release cycle.

The report claims that this new iPad will, unsurprisingly, pick up the design elements from Apple’s iPad mini. The iPad mini inherited the iPhone 5′s black/slate and white/silver designs…

Macotakara also claims some next-generation iPad dimensions: “the expectation comes to have a small 4mm in height, 17mm in width, depth 2mm.” These numbers are obviously unrealistic expectations for the fifth-generation iPad’s actual size, but these numbers would make sense in the context of being millimeters smaller in all of the iPad’s physical dimensions than the current iPad.

The current, fourth-generation iPad measures in at dimensions of 241.2 mm by 185.7 mm by 9.4 mm, so those numbers subtracted by Macotakara‘s numbers would point to a thinner iPad that is slightly shorter and narrower. The new supposed thinness would mean the next iPad is nearly as thin as the 7.2mm thin iPad mini.

A March 2013 fifth-generation iPad release would be roughly five months following the current iPad’s November release. This seems aggressive by Apple’s old iPad release pattern, but the quick succession of the third iPad to the current model, along with the recent launch of the iPad mini, shows that Apple is moving faster than ever in the tablet space.

The same report also claims that Apple is working on a second generation of the iPad mini. This new model is said to include a Retina display with the same resolution as the third and fourth generation iPads (2048 x 1536).

Digitimes previously reported that the iPad mini would gain a Retina display in its second generation and that the next 9.7-inch iPad would be thinner and lighter.

Macotakara previously pinpointed accurate information regarding dimensions of unreleased iPads. The site has also been previously accurate with Apple product production timeframes and various design information.

2012 in review: The year in Apple news

Dan Moren @dmoren

Lex Friedman @lexfri

Though Apple’s 2012 might have seemed dominated by Mac, iPhone, and iPad news, other big stories for the company cropped up throughout the year. This was Tim Cook’s first full year as Apple’s CEO, and Apple faced challenges in the realm of security, made transitions in its online services, and updated one of its flagship applications. We’ve already recounted the year in iOS news and the year in Mac news. Here are highlights from Apple’s 2012 in terms of, well, everything else.

This is Tim

This year marked Tim Cook’s first full calendar year as CEO. And he wasn’t quiet. Despite his promise that Apple would double down on secrecy, Cook spent a surprising amount of time in 2012 talking publicly about Apple’s plans and strategies.

He followed in Steve Jobs’s footsteps by speaking at the annual D10 conference. He reassured unhappy customers that a new professional Mac would arrive in 2013. He coined the term “toaster fridge” in describing why Apple isn't looking to make a hybrid Mac/tablet, and he explained his vision of the post-PC world.

Cook also made a public statement about iOS 6’s Maps app—specifically, saying that Apple was “extremely sorry” for the frustration the app had caused. He even took the step of suggesting that customers disappointed with Maps try mapping options from other companies such as Google, Microsoft, and Motorola. That, moment, dear Mayans, is when the world as we knew it drew to a close.

Sometimes, actions speak louder than even Tim Cook’s words. In late October, Cook oversaw personnel changes at Apple’s highest level, a staff shake-up that sent Scott Forstall and John Browett packing, with Jony Ive, Eddy Cue, and Craig Federighi all assuming significant, new responsibilities. That may well prove to be the most impactful decision of Cook’s year.

In security

For a platform long held to be as safe and secure as the Mac, it was a surprisingly noisy year on the security front. The insidious Flashback Trojan horse left many Mac owners feeling angsty about their computers. The malware, which could infect your Mac if you merely visited the wrong nefarious website, exploited various weaknesses in Java. On other computing platforms, Oracle—which owns Java—had already issued updates that patched those vulnerabilities. But since Apple issued Java updates independently, Mac users were largely left in the lurch; if you had Java enabled, you were at risk. Analysts at one point claimed that more than 600,000 Macs were infected with Flashback.

Apple made changes: Beyond merely releasing a Flashback removal tool and finally patching Java itself, Apple eventually disabled Java by default, and automatically turns off the Java browser plug-in if it goes unused for a while.

Beyond Flashback, Apple took other big steps in security in 2012. With Mountain Lion’s Gatekeeper feature, Apple aimed to make Mac users safer by limiting which apps could run on their computers by default. And by requiring developers to sandbox their apps, Apple pared down what even safe-to-run apps could access on Macs.

iTunes, Brute?

Midyear, we bid adieu to Ping, Apple’s social network, which departed this earth a mere two years after its introduction, owing to a number of problems. We had a better experience with the iTunes Match cloud streaming service after a year, though that still has room for improvement.

But the biggest news in iTunes this year came in September, when Apple announced that it would be overhauling the venerable media player/app store/syncing application. iTunes 11 was first scheduled to come out in October, but as that got down to the wire, Apple announced that it would be delaying the release until November, in order “to take a little extra time to get it right.”

Even with that, iTunes 11 didn’t appear until the end of November, and when it did arrive, it was to a mixed review: While people applauded some of the new features, many of the changes came across as off-putting to longtime users.

Cloudy with a chance of outages

The service previously known as MobileMe entered its second year in 2012, and although Apple improved some of its capabiltiies, it remained largely unchanged this year. We did bid good-bye to some old friends: As promised last year, Apple shut down iWeb hosting and iDisk in the middle of the year, though it graciously extended storage upgrades for those users by another year. iWork.com likewise took a long walk off a short pier.

Apple encountered some bumps in the road, though. In September, the company confirmed an extensive outage of iCloud email that affected many users, including a singer/songwriter.

Developers also expressed their frustration dealing with Apple’s online service, and we pointed out that iCloud has a surprising lack of collaborative and sharing features. Here's hoping that 2013 will give us something to look forward to in that department.

TV or not TV

Though Apple didn’t release the television set of Gene Munster’s dreams, it did show some love for its favorite hobby (after philately): the Apple TV. The third-generation Apple TV made its grand debut, adding 1080p support and not much else, without moving the $99 price tag an inch.

Perhaps the bigger story in the Apple TV arena was the introduction of Apple TV Software Update 5.0, which revamped the set-top box’s interface entirely, permitting quicker and simpler navigation—and seemingly making it possible for Apple to introduce Apple TV apps one day, should the company ever be so inclined. There’s always 2013.

Other Apple hardware

Apple quietly updated the AirPort Express in June, which pleased us greatly, thanks to the base station’s newfound ability to provide simultaneous dual-band networking and its addition of a second ethernet port.

The company also unveiled updates to the iPod touch and iPod nano. The new iPod touch comes in a variety of colors, and includes a color-matched wrist strap to go along with it.

Sporting a dual-core A5 processor and a much-improved camera, the venerable iPod touch remains Apple’s stalwart iPhone without a phone.

The iPod nano, meanwhile, gained a 2.5-inch Multi-Touch screen and a Home button, and once again supports video.

The lonely Shuffle and iPod Classic scored no updates at all, but at least Apple still sells them. For now.

Next-Generation iPhone to Launch in More Colors, Multiple Sizes?

Following up on a report last month from Jeffries analyst Peter Misek claiming that the next-generation iPhone could launch in the middle of this year with as many as 6-8 colors, Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White has issued a report today indicating similar information. White also believes that Apple could offer the device with multiple screen sizes.

Quote:
Our checks indicate that the next iPhone will have more choices for customers. This entails an expansion in both the color patterns and screen sizes with the next iPhone (i.e., likely called the iPhone 5S) that we currently believe will be launched in May/June with certain supply production starting in March/April.

White believes that the addition of multiple color choices for the iPod touch late last year was a "testing ground" for Apple and that the company is now moving toward bringing similar option to the iPhone, and eventually to the iPad.

As for screen size, White believes that Apple may for the first time offer a brand-new model with multiple screen size options for different segments of the market.

Quote:
Although Apple offers a 4-inch screen on the iPhone 5 and a 3.5-inch screen on the iPhone 4S and iPhone 4, the Company has never offered multiple screen sizes for a single model. We believe this is about to change with the next iPhone offering different screen sizes that we believe will allow Apple to better bifurcate the market and expand its reach. This eventually opens up the possibility for a lower-priced iPhone (i.e., iPhone mini) with a smaller screen size that could allow Apple to further penetrate markets such as China and open up opportunities in India. At the same time, Apple could unveil a larger screen size compared to the recently updated 4-inch screen on the iPhone 5.

Discussion of a larger screen size is particularly difficult to believe, given that Apple just transitioned to a taller screen with the iPhone 5, the first time Apple has changed the screen size on the iPhone since its launch.

In considering how Apple might make the iPhone's screen even larger, essentially the same set of issues debated before the launch of the iPhone 5 appears: more pixels or same resolution at lower pixel density. The latter solution in particular likely offers little for Apple, as the company is almost certainly uninterested in lowering pixel density simply to offer the same amount of screen real estate at a slightly larger physical size.

As for the former, Apple increased only the vertical pixel count for the iPhone 5, allowing for a larger screen while still offering full compatibility with apps designed for the smaller screens of previous devices. It seems difficult to believe that Apple would undertake yet another increase in pixel count so soon after the iPhone 5 debut, particularly if it involved increases in both vertical and horizontal directions.

Interference problems due to the built-in touch panel, the frequent Apple iPhone 5 touch sensitivity issues, Apple intends to switch to other touch technology in the next generation of mobile phones. Rumored Apple to find on the Innolux cooperation, the Innolux development TOD (Touch On Display) outside embedded (on cell) touch panel has been sent to the kind of certification, is expected to first entry to the Apple iPhone supply chain.

Although the LGD, JDI and Sharp panel vendor yield has been elevated to the level of 80%, but the touch interference problem is still unsolved, Apple therefore consider using other touch technologies. To the monolithic touch of view, there are still strong enough doubts, consider the simplification of the supply chain at the same time, Apple still tend to use embedded technology embedded / external integration touch TFT panel shipments.

Cheaper iPhone with larger screen and new design set for emerging markets, report claims

January 8, 2013 By Trevor Mogg
Technology News, Product Reviews and App Reviews | Digital Trends

We’re only a week into 2013 and the Apple rumor mill is already turning at top speed, with a report on Tuesday adding to earlier suggestions that the tech giant is prepping a cheaper handset for emerging markets – only this one apparently has a larger screen and “a brand new exterior design.”

It’s not the first time we’ve heard talk of Apple prepping a cheaper iPhone for emerging markets, but this latest piece of information offers a few more details (perhaps).

According to a report on Tuesday from Digitimes – a tech website whose sources, it has to be said, don’t always prove reliable – Apple is gearing up to launch a new-look iPhone for China and other emerging markets in the second half of this year.

The report states that sources in the supply chain claim to have seen the low-cost device, which apparently has a larger display than the current 4-inch screen found on the iPhone 5. The report also says the device will have “a brand new exterior design.”

A cheaper Apple handset with a larger screen conflicts with a report last week which suggested the Cupertino company had Samsung’s Galaxy S3 Mini in its sights. Strategy Analytics’ Neil Mawston told Reuters he believed Apple would have to launch an ‘iPhone Mini’ at some point “to address the hundreds of millions of prepaid users worldwide that cannot afford the current iPhone.”

A device with a smaller or same-sized display aimed at emerging markets certainly makes more sense than a device with a larger screen – something that many owners of the current iPhone might actually want – so perhaps what Digitimes’ sources have actually seen is the iPhone 5S or 6.

That would fit with what Topeka Capital Markets researcher Brian J. White told Reuters last week – he predicts the tech giant will release an iPhone 5S model with a variety of screen sizes in around four months’ time. He also floated the idea that the company will launch a smaller, cheaper iPhone for emerging markets.

Analyst Peter Misek, who doesn’t have a bad track record when it comes to predictions regarding Apple, said last month he thinks a low-cost iPhone could hit the market in the middle of this year for between $200 and $250.

With emerging markets offering Apple the possibility of a new and lucrative revenue stream, it appears to be a case of not if it’s going to launch a cheaper iPhone model, but when.

Next-Generation iPad and iPad Mini Rumored for March Launch

Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White today released a new report highlighting some of his observations from this week's CES in Las Vegas, noting that "checks" at the show suggest that Apple is looking to launch the next-generation versions of the iPad and iPad mini in March. Quote:
Our checks at CES indicate Apple will release the iPad 5 and the second-generation iPad mini this March. The iPad 5 is expected to be lighter and thinner than the iPad 4 that was released in October, while the form factor of the iPad mini should be similar to the first generation iPad mini that debuted in October.

White's comments are in line with a previous report from Japanese blog Macotakara which claimed that the a thinner and lighter fifth-generation iPad will be launching in March. RBC analyst Doug Freedman had also claimed that Apple was accelerating its plans for the second-generation iPad mini.

Apple has historically stuck to roughly year-long update cycles for its iOS devices, but the company surprised many observers by launching the fourth-generation iPad in October, just seven months after the debut of the third-generation model. It is unclear whether that shorter interval is the start of a trend for Apple, as it may simply have been a one-time event due to Apple's move to the new Lightning connector.

There have, however, been growing rumors of shorter update cycles being part of a new strategy for Apple as it seeks to remain competitive in the fast-moving mobile device market and smooth out its sales somewhat throughout the year.

Rumor: Fifth-gen iPad, second-gen iPad mini to debut in March

By Neil Hughes
AppleInsider | News and rumors since 1997
Friday, January 11, 2013, 10:13 am

Apple's iPad lineup is now on a twice-a-year refresh cycle, according to a new rumor, which pegs both the full-size iPad and iPad mini as due for updates in March.

Brian White of Topeka Capital Markets said his checks with industry sources at this week's CES event in Las Vegas, Nev., indicated both the fifth-generation iPad and second-generation iPad mini will debut this March, just five months after the last update was announced.

White was told that the new "iPad 5" will be lighter and thinner than the fourth-generation model Apple released late last year. The updated model features a new A6X processor and Apple's smaller Lightning chip but maintained the same design as the third-generation iPad released last March.

As for the iPad mini, White said the second-generation device is expected to have the same form factor. A new model would likely just have upgraded components, such as a faster chip.

No mention was made of a potential high-resolution Retina display in a new iPad mini. One report from last month claimed Apple was focused on boosting the resolution of the next-generation iPad mini.

Though many industry insiders attend CES, Apple does not have an official presence at the annual event. White did not indicate the source of his information aside from unnamed "checks" at the show.

White also reported last week that Apple is expected to debut new iPhones this summer in more sizes and colors, expanding the lineup from the current black and white options. He expects the new iPhones to debut in the May-June timeframe, which would be earlier than the last two years.

Apple Cuts Orders for iPhone Parts

WSJ

1/14/13

Apple Inc. has cut its orders for components for the iPhone 5 due to weaker-than-expected demand, people familiar with the situation said Monday.

Apple's orders for iPhone 5 screens for the January-March quarter, for example, have dropped to roughly half of what the company had previously planned to order, two of the people said.

The Cupertino, Calif., company has also cut orders for components other than screens, according to one of the people.

Apple notified the suppliers of the order cut last month, the people said.
The move indicates that sales of the new iPhone haven't been as strong .

Entry-level iPhone reportedly may adopt plastic chassis

Ninelu Tu, Taipei; Joseph Tsai, DIGITIMES [Monday 14 January 2013]

Apple's rumored entry-level iPhone reportedly may adopt plastic for its chassis instead of reinforced glass or unibody metal as in the company's standard iPhone models, to save cost, according to sources from the upstream supply chain. However, Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) declined to comment on its clients or orders when asked about the report.

The rumor in the supply chain is that the inexpensive iPhone chassis supplier will reportedly be a US-based electronic manufacturing service (EMS) provider.
However, other rumors are circulating that the entry-level iPhone will adopt a chassis mixed with plastic and metal, with the internal metal parts being able to be seen from outside through special design, the sources noted.

The sources pointed out that the related upstream components for the entry-level iPhone are currently going through validation and the actual product may show up in the market in the second half of 2013.

Apple's 2013 Product Roadmap Predictions: Multiple iPhones, Retina iPad Mini, All-Retina MacBook Pros

Macrumors.com
1/16/2013

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has a very good track record in predicting Apple's product plans, has issued a new research report outlining his expectations for Apple's 2013 product launches. Kuo believes that Apple will focus its launches on the third quarter of this year, with a number of updates throughout the company's various product families.

- iPhone: Kuo expects that Apple will introduce both an iPhone 5S and a revamped iPhone 5 around June or July of this year, with the iPhone 5S appearing very similar to the current iPhone 5 but carrying a number of upgrades including an A7 system-on-a-chip for better performance, a fingerprint sensor, and camera improvements such as an f2.0 aperture and a smart LED flash. He also believes that the lower-cost iPhone will in many ways simply be an iPhone 5 repackaged into a slightly thicker (8.2 mm vs. the current 7.6 mm) plastic enclosure available in six colors.

- iPad and iPad mini: Kuo forecasts that Apple will update both lines during the third quarter of the year, with the iPad mini gaining a Retina display as the most notable change. He also predicts that the full-size iPad will become considerably slimmer and lighter and adopt the thinner side bezels seen on the iPad mini.

- MacBook Pro: In line with his predictions from last year, Kuo believes that Apple will do away with the non-Retina MacBook Pro line in 2013, moving to an all-Retina lineup at cheaper price points than the current Retina models. Kuo also believes that Apple will tweak the design of these thinner Retina MacBook Pros, despite having just introduced the current form factor last year.

- MacBook Air: Retina displays remain a challenge for the MacBook Air given their relative thickness, and Kuo predicts that they will not be appearing in the 2013 MacBook Air lineup. Kuo believes that a move to Intel's forthcoming Haswell platform will be the main upgrade for the machines, with the update coming perhaps as soon as late in the second quarter.

- Desktops: Kuo notes that the iMac redesign has been well-received, but it appears that he does not see Retina displays coming to the lineup in 2013. He simply predicts a shift to the Haswell platform for the iMac and Mac mini in the fourth quarter of the year. Kuo's report does not address a new Mac Pro, even though Apple CEO Tim Cook had personally shared that a significant update for the line was due in 2013.

- iPod touch: Apple will reportedly discontinue the fourth-generation iPod touch, which is currently being sold alongside the new fifth-generation models. In order to fill the gap, Kuo believes that Apple will introduce a scaled-back fifth-generation model with 8 GB of storage and no rear camera at $199.

- Apple TV: Kuo predicts a minor update to the existing Apple TV product as soon as late this quarter, but he offers no details on what the update would entail. He also notes that Apple's more substantial television effort is unlikely to appear in 2013, with content issues and a lack of experience in the television set industry pushing things back until 2014.

Apple Invents a Removable Device Clip with Glass Touchpad

Patently Apple

January 17, 2013

On January 17, 2013, the US Patent & Trademark Office published a patent application from Apple that reveals a new product in the form of a removable device clip. The advanced clip may offer tactile buttons or a transparent glass touchpad. The clip could be used as a remote control. The removable clip could be applied to an iPod, iPhone, iPad, MacBook and yes, even a "convertible notebook." If you like to bring your iPod or iPhone to a workout, the clip will be able to provide users with an added level of convenience with quick to control buttons. The clip will attach to devices via a magnetic mechanism.

Apple's Patent Background

Various types of clips are provided today with portable electronic computing devices such as media players (e.g., music player or video player). The clips today typically serve only one function, which is to clip the device to various objects such as a person's clothing. As a result of such typical purposes of clips, clips usually only operate to mechanically connect the electronic computing device to another object. In some cases, the clips are used with electronic computing devices having electronic displays. In such cases, the clips are necessarily provided on a surface of the device other than the surface having the display, since doing otherwise would result in the clip undesirably interfering with the display. Often, the clip is physically integrated with the electronic computing device such that the clip and device form a single unit. Such a unit necessarily has a thicker width than the electronic computing device alone, which is in many cases disadvantageous for marketing purposes.

While today's clips provide a valuable function for portable electronic computing devices, they are deficient in that the real estate used by the clips is underutilized in that the clips are only used to attach electronic computing devices to other objects. Such underutilization is particularly undesirable as technology continues to miniaturize since even the smallest amount of real estate used by a device is often considered burdensome by a consumer.

Apple's Solution

Embodiments of Apple's invention generally concern systems, apparatus's, and methods for providing a removable clip with a user interface to electronic computing devices. In one embodiment, the user interface may be configured to operate as a clip, thereby enabling the electronic computing device to be removably attached to an object such as a person's clothing. The user interface may also be operable to receive user inputs (via, e.g., a touch pad) and thereby control an electronic computing device.

In some embodiments, the user interface may be transparent. As a result, information such as icons displayed on the electronic computing device may be visible to the user via the transparent user interface. The electronic computing device may then be responsive to user engagement with the clip based on locations of the user engagement and their correspondence to the icons displayed on the electronic computing device. In this fashion, a portable user interface may be provided that significantly enhances the functionality and usability of existing devices, and in some cases may also advantageously operate as a clip.

In one embodiment, the user interface may be configured to operate as a clip, and the user interface may be operable to display information (via, e.g., an LCD). By coupling the clip to an electronic computing device, the electronic computing device may thereafter display information on the clip via the user interface. In some embodiments, the display capability of the clip may be combined with the ability to receive user inputs (e.g., a touch pad may be layered over an LCD). In this fashion, a significant amount of functionality may be added to existing devices, and in some cases the device may also advantageously operate as a clip.

Various other features may also provide numerous other advantages over the state of the art. For example, the user interfaces may include tactile feedback elements such as rubber domes. In this fashion, a user may be able to easily cause the electronic device to perform a function without visually seeing the device or user interface.

Apple states that their newly designed removable clip could be modified to apply to an iPod, iPhone, iPad, camera, game player, MacBook and believe it or not Apple includes a "convertible notebook," which is one the first times they've used this phrasing – even though Tim Cook shuns the very thought of such a device ever being made by Apple. Some of the configurations for differing devices are shown below in the first graphic.

In some embodiments, the front surface of the clip could include an input element that may be operable to receive user inputs and show icons for play, pause, fast forward, rewind, volume up, and/or volume down.

As shown below in patent figure 2A, when a user wants to play a video while the clip is still attached, the video will automatically position itself below the clip so as to not interfere with their viewing.

In one embodiment, the removable user interface may be used to control an electronic computing device. In this case, user interface element 154 may include touch-sensitive regions. Tactile feedback elements 156 may also be provided to enable a user to locate the touch-sensitive regions.

The tactile feedback elements shown above may provide stops to prevent the body from directly contacting a surface of electronic computing device. In such a case, tactile feedback elements may be made of material that is softer than the material which the electronic display is made of. For example, they may be made of at least one of silicon, rubber, cloth, soft plastic, etc.

Apple's patent FIG. 9B illustrated above shows a profile view of removable user interface with a removable user interface that may include a removable capacitive or resistive touch pad.

A Note about Patent Figure Designs

It should be noted that patent figures represent conceptual products while pointing to specific technical aspects detailed in the patent application. Patent application figures aren't to be confused with prototypes or design patents illustrating the actual look of the commercial product.

A Word about Continuation Patents

It should be noted that the US Patent and Trademark Office did in fact publish a series of older continuation patents today dating back to between 2007 and 2011. The continuation patents listed below are specifically referenced as such under the section titled "Cross-Reference to Related Applications." Generally speaking, this type of patent application contains modifications that Apple's legal team have made to the original patent claims in an effort to have the US Patent Office finally approve their invention. In general continuation patents don't represent any new developments from the original patent filing. Some websites mistakenly report on continuation patents as if they were new Apple filings to which they are not. Here are the older continuation patents that were published today by the US Patent Office:

1. 20130019237 & 20130019234: Both of these are old 2011 patents titled "System and method for Linking Pre-Installed Software to a user Account on an Online Store.

2. 20130018984: This is an old 2007 patent titled "Information Card Federation Point Tracking and Management.

3. 20130018792: This is an old 2009 patent titled "Parental Controls."

4. 20130017821: This is an old 2010 patent titled "Wireless Connection Control."

5. 20130013779: This is an old 2010 patent titled "Efficient Service Discovery for Peer-to-Peer Networking Devices."

Exclusive: Japan's Sharp cuts iPad screen output

By Reiji Murai and Miyoung Kim
TOKYO/SEOUL | Fri Jan 18, 2013 3:48pm EST
Business & Financial News, Breaking US & International News | Reuters.com

(Reuters) - Sharp Corp has nearly halted production of 9.7-inch screens for Apple Inc's iPad, two sources said, possibly as demand shifts to its smaller iPad mini.

Sharp's iPad screen production line at its Kameyama plant in central Japan has fallen to the minimal level to keep the line running this month after a gradual slowdown began at the end of 2012 as Apple manages its inventory, the industry sources with knowledge of Sharp's production plans told Reuters.

Sharp has stopped shipping iPad panels, the people with knowledge of the near total production shutdown said. The exact level of remaining screen output at Sharp was not immediately clear but it was extremely limited, they said.

Company spokeswoman Miyuki Nakayama said: "We don't disclose production levels."
Apple officials, contacted late in the evening after normal business hours in California, did not have an immediate comment.

The sources didn't say exactly why production had nearly halted. Among the possibilities are a seasonal drop in demand, a switch to another supplier, a shift in the balance of sales to the mini iPad, or an update in the design of the product.

Macquarie Research has estimated that iPad shipments will tumble nearly 40 percent in the current quarter to about 8 million from about 13 million in the fourth quarter, although Apple's total tablet shipments will show a much smaller decrease due to strong iPad mini sales.
APPLE SHARES

Any indication that iPad sales are struggling could add to concern that the appeal of Apple products is waning after earlier media reports said it is slashing orders for iPhone 5 screens and other components from its Asian suppliers.

Those reports helped knock Apple's shares temporarily below $500 this week, the first time its stock had been below the threshold mark in almost one year.

Apple, the reports said, has asked state-managed Japan Display, Sharp and LG Display to halve supplies of iPhone panels from an initial plan for about 65 million screens in January-March. Apple is losing ground to Samsung, as well as emerging rivals including China's Huawei Technologies Co Ltd and ZTE Corp.

NO BIG CHANGE AT OTHER MAKERS

In addition to Sharp, Apple also buys iPad screens from LG Display Co Ltd, its biggest supplier, and Samsung Display, a flat-panel unit of Samsung Electronics.
Both LG Display and Samsung Display declined to comment.

A source at Samsung Display, however, said there had not been any significant change in its panel business with Apple, which has been steadily reducing panel purchases from the South Korean firm.

A person who is familiar with the situation at LG Display said iPad screen production in the current quarter had fallen from the previous quarter ending in December, mainly due to weak seasonal demand that is typical after the busy year-end holiday sales period.
Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu said some of the product cutbacks at Sharp are probably seasonal.

"The March quarter is almost always weaker than the December quarter," he said, adding that Apple also consolidates suppliers of certain components during quarters with weaker demand. "The Korean manufacturers are more efficient and typically have lower costs."

Apple's iPad sales may have also suffered amid a weak Christmas shopping period that hurt other consumer gadget makers as well.

CROWD OF RIVAL PRODUCTS

Apple also faces stiffening competition in tablets from a growing crowd of rival products from makers including Samsung with its Galaxy and Microsoft Corp's Surface. A consumer shift to smaller 7-inch screen devices, which Apple responded to late last year by launching its iPad mini for $329, are adding pressure.

BNP Paribas expects the iPad mini will eat into sales of the full-sized iPad, with the mini rise to 60 percent of total iPad shipments in the January-March quarter.
Looking to cut into Apple's market share in the smaller segment are Amazon.com Inc with its Kindle and Google Inc with its Nexus 7.

CEO Tim Cook, who is credited with building Apple's Asian supply chain, has overseen several gadget launches, including the iPhone 5, the latest iPad models and the iPad mini during his first year, is under pressure to deliver the kind of product innovations that wowed consumers during Steve Jobs' tenure to keep his company's profit growth stellar.

Sharp, which also supplies screens for the iPhone, has been working with its main banks on a restructuring plan after posting a $5.6 billion loss for the past fiscal year. To secure emergency financing from lenders including Mizuho Financial Group and Mitsubishi Financial Group it had mortgaged its domestic factories and offices including the one building screens for Apple.

In December, Qualcomm Inc agreed to invest as much as $120 million in Sharp and the two companies said they would work to develop new power-saving screens.

Apple to release two 4-inch iPhones featuring in-cell touch in 2013, say sources

Siu Han, Taipei; Alex Wolfgram, DIGITIMES [Tuesday 22 January 2013]

Apple is planning the release of two iPhones in 2013 that are likely to be sized 4-inch and feature in-cell technology, according to industry sources.

Previously it was said that Apple would release a lower-cost version of its iPhone with a bigger screen in 2013. But the sources claimed that Apple is indeed developing an iPhone with a bigger screen, but that will not be among the models to be lancuhed this year.

One of the two versions to be introduced this year will target the midrange market segment, but both will adopt in-cell touch technology.

However, the sources noted it is still yet to be determined if Apple will have adequate supply of in-cell touch panels in 2013 for a lower-cost version of the iPhone due to mass production issues from the technology in 2012. The iPhone 5 took a hit in sales during 2012 as a result of poor yields for in-cell technology, but the sources are now saying those yields are improving.

Meanwhile, shipments for iPhone products are expected to reach about 37 million units in the first quarter of 2013, 20 million of which are expected to be for the iPhone 5. Additionally, the iPhone 5 is expected to drop even further in shipments to approximately 18 million units in the second quarter of 2013.
